“I like the old time, singing, shouting, praying, singing ...”
My name is Cecil Yancy. On the podcast, Songs that Soothe the Soul, I’ll sing the old songs of yesteryear—just me and my guitar and the songs that settled way deep down in my soul as a young boy growing up in little ole country churches of north Alabama.
A new episode every week at cecilyancy.com, Facebook, Instagram, WVZM.ORG, and downtown Memphis radio on 1003.FM.
It was a Christmas present from my older brother when I was 7 that introduced me to Johnny Cash. He gave me the Live at Folsom Prison album.
There was only one problem: My mother knew Johnny Cash’s music and her strict rules forbade me from listening to anything secular. Fortunately, it was a gift from my great and older brother.
But before she would let me listen to the whole album, she vetted it. She felt the need to put a scratch in the vinyl every time Johnny Cash cussed. That record had a lot of scratches, but like the groove in the vinyl, they etched themselves into the psyche and soundtrack of a youngster. That soundtrack continues today as I tell the stories about Johnny Cash’s life and play the records on WVZM.ORG, 100.3 FM, in downtown Memphis, Tennessee, where Cash began his career.
My name is Cecil Yancy. Thank you for listening to the Johnny Cash Show with Cecil Yancy.
