Hello, I'm Cecil Yancy
I’m a storyteller who just happens to carry a guitar around my neck.
Although it’s been a series of twists and turns, music is my life’s work.
From the time I was big enough to hold a guitar, I’ve been playing and singing for folks.
A degree in journalism helps augment the natural ability to tell a story.
Along the way I got married, raised children and sang professionally with my wife of 16
years. She passed away in 2016 . I was a widower for seven years. My heart opened up
while continuing to sing and bring joy to people. I got married again in 2022.
Music has sustained me through the hard times and focused the light on a bright future
bringing joy to audiences of all ages through music and educational entertainment.
I connect history and culture through music. I research the culture that surrounds the
songs.
I take a multi-faceted approach. In schools, I perform educational programs about blues,
folk music, Memphis music, rockabilly music and bluegrass music.
Over the radio airwaves, I write, perform and produce two radio shows each week: Songs
that Soothe the Soul and The Johnny Cash Show with Cecil Yancy.
Both originate from an undisclosed location in Memphis, Tenn., over the airwaves of
WVZM, 100.3 FM and WVZM.ORG and found wherever podcasts play.
As my dear mother used to tell me with a hearty laugh, “Son, you sure do work hard at not
working.”
Yes, I do, Mama.
When I’m not working, I’m walking in the woods for inspiration, spending time with my wife,
playing music, cooking and listening to late-night radio before drifting off to sleep.
It’s a wonderful life, brought to you by music.
